To begin with, Keenan was raised in Oxford; his father was a former musician, who later worked as a local real estate developer in New Orleans. Passing his youth in New Orleans, Keenan started playing guitar very early thanks to his father, and joined the Graveyard Rodeo group. During their concerts in the region, he became friends with members of the Corrosion of Conformity group, and finally joined them in the early 1990s as a second guitarist. After the departure of Karl Angell in 1993, Keenan became the singer of the group. Together with the band, he has released nine studio albums, 11 singles and Eps; the most successful albums were “Blind” (1991) and “Deliverance” (1994).

Keenan is also a guitarist of the group Down, launched in the early 1990s as Phil Anselmo’s parallel project. However, his commitments with this group were sporadic, and allowed Keenan to continue his career with Corrosion of Conformity. Alongside the band Pepper released two albums in 1995 and 2002, and went on tour in Europe. Pepper is a friend of the leader of Metallica James Hetfield, which allowed him to sing one of the verses of the song “Tuesday’s Gone” from the album “Garage Inc.” (1998) of Metallica. Keenan participated in an audition for the vacancy of Metallica’s bassist after Jason Newsted’s departure, and thus was seen in the DVD “Some Kind of Monster” (2004). However, he did not pass the audition losing it to Robert Trujillo.

Finally, in the personal life of the musician, he does not reveal much about his private life. Although single, he has a daughter named Flannery Rose Keenan, with long-time girlfriend Anna Hrnjak.

Like his friend Hetfield, he shares the same passion for restoring cars and motorbikes, and is also a fan of NASCAR -, Hetfield was heard on one of the songs of the album “Wiseblood” (1996) by Corrosion of Conformity. Pepper is also a big fan of Black Sabbath as well as ZZ Top and Led Zeppelin. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans, including Pepper Keenan’s home and the bar owned by Le Bon Temps Roulé. Keenan had time to fly from the city just before the disaster: his home was two blocks away from the Mississippi, in the area called Carrollton. As the storm approached, Keenan’s bar suffered the plundering of the desperate ones left in the city, but remained standing, as well as his home. At the moment, both buildings are still without electricity so Keenan with the family live at Lake Charles, Louisiana.
